Alaska is a land of natural wonder, filled with breathtaking landscapes and wild animals that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. For Juneau photographer Sarah Hughes, capturing the beauty of Alaska through her lens has been a lifelong passion.
Sarah grew up in a small town in rural Alaska and fell in love with photography at a young age. She received her first camera as a gift from her parents when she was just 10 years old, and from that moment on, she was hooked.
After graduating college, Sarah decided to make photography her full-time career and moved to Juneau to start her own photography business. Living in the capital city of Alaska has given Sarah access to some of the most stunning landscapes and wildlife the state has to offer.
“Juneau is a really special place, ” Sarah says. “You can be in the heart of downtown one minute, and then in the middle of a glacier field the next. It’s truly a photographer’s dream.”
One of Sarah’s favorite things to photograph in Juneau is the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. “It’s a really magical experience to see the lights dance across the sky, ” Sarah says. “I love being able to capture that moment and share it with others through my photography.”
In addition to the northern lights, Sarah also loves to photograph wildlife. “Alaska is home to some incredible animals that you can’t find anywhere else in the world, ” she says. “I love being able to capture their beauty and personality through my photos.”
One of Sarah’s most memorable wildlife encounters was with a family of humpback whales. “I was out on a boat with some friends when we came across a group of whales, ” she recalls. “We were able to watch them for hours and I was able to capture some really incredible photos of them breaching and playing in the water.”
Sarah’s photography has been featured in several publications, including Alaska Magazine and National Geographic. Her work has also been displayed in galleries across the state.
Despite her success, Sarah remains humble and focused on her passion for photography. “I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I love every day, ” she says. “I just want to continue capturing the beauty of Alaska and sharing it with others.”
In addition to her photography, Sarah is also passionate about conservation efforts in Alaska. “It’s important to remember that these landscapes and animals are fragile and we need to do everything we can to protect them, ” she says. “I hope that my photography can inspire others to appreciate and care for the natural world.”
When asked about her favorite part of being a photographer, Sarah doesn’t hesitate to answer. “It’s the feeling you get when you capture the perfect shot, ” she says. “There’s something really special about knowing that you were able to freeze a moment in time and share it with others.”
For Sarah, being a Juneau photographer is about more than just taking pictures. It’s about capturing the beauty of Alaska and sharing it with the world. Through her work, she hopes to inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world around us.
